We build technology that gives sensitive cargo a voice. Through a close collaboration with Vitusapotek / Norsk Medisinaldepot (NMD), one of Norway’s largest pharmaceutical distributors, that voice is now helping safeguard the flow of life-critical medicines across the entire country.
NMD, the company behind the Vitusapotek and Ditt Apotek Apotek pharmacy chains, operates nearly 400 locations nationwide and distributes medicines to more than 100 municipalities. With a complex logistics network and increasing regulatory demands, they saw the need to strengthen how they monitor and document transport conditions — in real time, and at scale.
A Collaboration Rooted in Precision and Trust
Together with NMD’s transport, IT, and quality teams, we’ve developed and tested tailored cold chain tracking solutions built around Emma — our smart, circular sensor device. What began as a pilot has now evolved into a signed agreement: Emma will be deployed across transports entering and leaving NMD’s main hubs in Oslo and Harstad, monitoring pharmaceutical shipments spanning the entire country, from Kristiansand to Kirkenes.
“We’re very pleased with how this collaboration has taken shape,” says Per Limmesand, Head of Transport at NMD. “The Surfact solution gives us continuous and precise documentation of temperature and transport conditions – while being developed and produced here in Norway, and with sustainability in mind.”
Real-Time Oversight in a Challenging Geography
With Emma installed, NMD gains live access to data on temperature, light exposure, shock, and location — delivered seamlessly to the cloud. In a country where rugged terrain and long transport distances pose constant logistical challenges, having real-time insight into how pharmaceuticals are handled en route isn’t just useful – it’s essential.
The technology not only supports compliance with stringent pharmaceutical transport regulations, but also gives operators actionable data to respond quickly when deviations occur. This is especially critical when transporting temperature-sensitive goods where even minor fluctuations can impact product integrity.
“NMD plays a vital role in public health,” says Bjørnar Lie, our CTO and co-founder. “They ensure vital medicines reach every part of Norway — and it’s a privilege to contribute technology that helps make that mission more resilient, responsive, and sustainable.”
The Global Stakes Behind the Cold Chain
According to the IQVIA Institute, the global biopharmaceutical industry loses an estimated $35 billion each year due to failures in temperature-controlled logistics. The World Health Organization estimates that 25% of all vaccines arrive at their destination in a degraded state due to cold chain issues.
These are avoidable losses — and we believe technology like Emma can play a crucial role in reducing them.
Designed in Norway. Built for Global Impact.
Emma is our compact, circular smart tracker – designed, developed, and produced in Norway, using 100% recycled ocean plastic. With a two-year battery life, instant deployment, and no gateways required, it captures and transmits real-time data on key conditions for every shipment.
Combined with Emma Cloud and our advanced analytics platform, customers gain full visibility across their fleet – with automated compliance documentation, customizable alerts, and integration into existing systems.
This is what makes Emma more than a tracker. It’s a full-stack cold chain intelligence platform that brings control, transparency, and sustainability into one solution.
